Edenvale: A Historical Gem in Gauteng
Edenvale, a suburb nestled in the heart of Gauteng, boasts a rich history that dates back over a century. Named after John Eden, co-owner of the original Rietfontein farm, this area emerged as a town post the Anglo Boer War. It began its growth with the sale of demarcated stands to Cornish miners working at Rietfontein mine. The community flourished further with the establishment of nearby dynamite factories, attracting workers from Austria, Germany, and Italy.
Despite economic challenges during miners' strikes and the closure of Rietfontein mine, Edenvale persevered and transformed into a vibrant rural village by the 1930s. The introduction of electricity and water spurred industrial development, complemented by the growth of neighbouring black townships. The area expanded rapidly with the opening of Jan Smuts Airport and Kelvin power station, drawing in more residents and contributing to the development of informal settlements.
In 1948, government policies led to the relocation of black families to township areas, prompting the establishment of larger settlements like Tembisa. After the 1995 local government elections, various extensions were amalgamated into Edenvale, creating a unified community under the name Lethabong, meaning "place of happiness."
